A recent Washington Post headline announced:

"A 15-year-old known for tough questions was kicked out of a GOP event."

Part of the article reads as follows:

"Quinn Mitchell asks hard questions of some of the most powerful politicians in the country.

"At a campaign event in 2019, he pressed presidential candidate Joe Biden about whether “impeachment proceedings should start” against President Donald Trump, the Boston Globe reported. That same year, as an 11-year-old, he asked Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who was also running for the Democratic nomination, about special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s testimony before Congress on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, according to USA Today. And in June, he asked Florida governor and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis if Trump had “violated the peaceful transfer of power” on Jan. 6, 2021.

"Quinn is not a journalist, a political strategist or even a voter. He’s a 15-year-old high school freshman who, despite his age, has become a fixture on the New Hampshire presidential campaign circuit. His consistent presence and pointed questions at town halls and rallies led former New Jersey governor Chris Christie (R) to describe him as “America’s most famous political teenager,” according to the Globe."

The article goes on to say that Quinn has been doing this since he was eleven. We wonder how many more young people are able to exert their own responsible agency were they not patronized by arbitrary soccial rules.

As late as the 1970’s a kid who was gay, and thought he was the only one, could not find comfort by looking to the animal world for at least some confirmation. All references in those pre-Internet days pontificated that homosexuality was against nature. Not even barn animals would engage in such disgusting behavior.

A recent RadioLab segment focused on female seagull pairings as an example of lesbianism in nature, and spends the better part of twenty minutes on this. It should be noted that these pairings are social and not sexual. It is only at about minute 23 in the podcast that the discussion finally covers the multitudes of actual homosexual acts among animals. The point that caught our attention was the recognition that homosexual animal behavior was also beneficial to protecting the young and immature. Let’s hope the podcast reaches God’s ear, or at least that of society.

Nature is immensely diverse in its adaptations. The blind notion of "unnaturalness" existing unexamined for centuries is patently false. Not only is homosexuality natural but is demonstrably intergenerationally beneficial.

Quite a number of research papers concerning child sexual abuse (CSA) come across our desk. This current focus on sex is disturbing because it simply puts aside horrendous physical abuse as well as mostly hidden and immensely potent emotional abuse and limits itself almost exclusively to sex. This particular paper found physical and emotional abuse universally unacceptable to various culture but not for neglect and sex. The research into CSA (and some does certainly occur as does all other sorts of human depravity) would not in itself disturb us if most of it was not demonstrably biased.

You can probably ignore the jargon that gives this “research” an air of learned science and obfuscates its bias.

Right from the start, the authors label all the behaviors they are researching as “child maltreatment” (CM). They include in CM neglect and sex along with the horrendous ones we cited but found cultural acceptance in only the first two. The stench of cultural superiority could not be any stronger. In many cultures, especially where poverty exists, children early on learn to be self-reliant. They know their parents work hard to provide for them and thus exhibit their love. It is no surprise that such incorrectly labeled neglect in many cultures is culturally acceptable and even beneficial to self-reliance. Even in the United States, in years past, latchkey kids, the children of working parents, were left alone for a good part of the day. Today, such parents are often unfairly subject to criminal charges of child neglect.

Of course, unwanted sexual imposition of any human being on another is unacceptable under any circumstances. But again, cultural imperialism inserts its judgmental nose into those cultures who see sexual feelings and their caring expressions as normal and of immense emotional benefit at any age.

With today's current hysteria concerning pedophilia, the play Downstate is a courageous examination of a still very much taboo subject. It examines the topic sympathetically through the stories of three men consigned with very limited freedom to a dismal group home in downstate Illinois.

Surprisingly, despite dealing with a subject fraught with negative emotions, many reviews were positive. One, from The New York Times, was not whereas the one from The Washington Post calls the play "brilliant." Even the New York Post, not known for liberal views, praised the play.

The received wisdom that constantly bombards us is that youngsters, including teenagers, do not have the capacity yet for mature judgment. This may be true for some but it is also too true for too many adults as the storming of the Capitol on January 6th 2020, to give a saliant example, will attest. Yet the nightly news often highlights the mature accomplishments of even very young children. It is mainly in the sexual realm that the mistrust of the judgment of young people resides.

Not allowing youngsters to do military service is a rational thing, not because they do not have the capacity to defend their country but because they have yet to enjoy a decent amount of life. An accidental exception occurred on a US battleship in the Second World War when a 12-year-old boy slipped through the recruiting process. Not only was he at ager 13 a veteran of a bloody sea battle but was also decorated for bravery. See the link below.

The yahoos are at again! For those who are unfamiliar with the term first coined by Jonathan Swift (1667 - 7745) in his satirical novel Gulliver's Travels, it refers to a race of subhumans with no grace nor powers of reason.

The yahoos in question have been protesting the research of a professor at Virginia's Old Dominion University. The professor, Allyn Walker, in his research regarding pedophilia, in order to destigmatize the term, has been using "minor-attracted people" (MAP) instead. The university has put the professor on administrative leave. Mob rule and the loss of academic freedom seem to be the new normal.

A 1969 TV ad for Prince Spaghetti illustrates the independence given to children at the time. The ad shows a boy named Anthony running through the streets of Boston in time to eat his favorite spaghetti dinner. It is obvious from the ad that Anthony had been out on his own until supper time. This was then the norm, and children led happy fulfilled lives.

People forget that not that long ago “latchkey kids” in working families were quite common. Parents had to work and so provided their responsible children keys access to their homes. Children often played outdoors after school, had their friends over or simply got home for snacks or when it was time for dinner. These children somehow managed to navigate life’s challenges and grew up, for the greater majority, as responsible adults. It does not require much formal study to already observe that many young people today have the personal consistency of snowflakes and little of the independent spirit of their forebears.

Lenore Skenazy is one of the more visible people to have recognized the potential damage to coming generations. When she allowed her then 9-year-old son ride the New York City subway alone, it caused at the time a national sensation. Skenazy did not buy into the belief that children were in constant danger of a host of perils and put her confidence in the child she knew and who she knew could handle the challenge. She also trusted that most people are decent and helpful. At the same time, she understood that to raise strong independent kids parents must be able to let go according to their observations and understandings of their children’s abilities.

Though unlikely perils that many parents fear can happen, they are as extremely rare as is the winning of an outsized lottery. Both misconceptions benefit from wide publicities and thus gain false credibility. Child abduction by strangers, one of the bugaboos of many parents, is infinitesimal when considering such enormous preventable harms as car accidents or an epidemic of accidental gun discharges. Yet irrational fears persist. The irrationality is so pervasive that many communities will punish parents who do not rigidly supervise their children.

Although this has been examined at the national and state levels, there is more value in acquiring information at the county level to guide local policies. A 1990 Disney movie, Blank Check, has recently caused quite a stir. A scene showing a mature woman kissing a 12-year-old boy is the source of the hullabaloo. Disney, always having been family oriented, did not see the harm at the time nor did it then receive the negative attention it is now getting. It seems that revisionism is now in style as it was in Soviet era Russia and in the dystopian novel 1984.

It is worth noting that had a mature man been shown kissing a 12-year-old boy on the lips in any movie in 1990, it would have sent the director, his film company and everyone involved into professional oblivion. At least, having a woman similarly kissing a boy was an admission that such an age gap was not really a problem.

Movie buffs may remember child actor and Disney star Tommy Kirk. As is the eventual fate of all of us, he recently died. He was 79.

Kirk led a tumultuous life struggling with drug addiction. As a young adult, he was arrested for marijuana and barbiturate possession (though the latter had been medically prescribed).

Where today it would have been a criminal scandal, at age 21 it was discovered that he had been “seeing” a 15-year-old boy. This discovery led to his dismissal from the Disney Company. In 1973, he publicly came out as gay.

Fans of Ivan Noel's films will have easily recognized his love for boys. Unfortunately, as is tragically too often the case, that genuine love was interpreted as something evil. Not choosing to live the life he wanted he recently committed suicide and left an elaborate note explaining his decision.

It is an outrage that yet another cultural icon has been destroyed by a society blinded by willful ignorance.

Ivan Noel was French/Argentinian. His films were mostly in Spanish. Among them were En tu Ausencia (In your Absence) and Cordero de Dios (Lamb of God).
